Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

Five acres in the Florida Keys, adults only, reached by launch and no other way.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Little Torch Key's outer island, Little Munson, lies off the Lower Keys about three miles into the Atlantic, reached only by the resort's launch or seaplane — there is no bridge and no road. The island covers about five acres of palm and beach. One resort occupies it, and it takes adults only. It is one of very few genuine private-island resorts in the continental United States.

Thirty thatched bungalow suites hold the property, with no televisions, no clocks and no telephones in the rooms. The island was rebuilt after Hurricane Irma flattened it in 2017. Its history includes the filming of a Bogart picture and a run of presidential visits, which the property still trades on.

No bridge, in a state built on causeways. The Keys are famously connected end to end; this island deliberately is not, and that single fact is the product.

Rebuilt after Irma. The current buildings post-date 2017 and are engineered for the storm risk in a way the originals were not.

Who it is not for

Little Palm is wrong for families, since the resort takes adults only. It is wrong for guests wanting a large island to explore at five acres. And it is wrong for travellers expecting Caribbean water clarity, which the Keys do not reliably offer. And it is wrong for guests who want space to walk or a dive centre on site. Those wanting a Caribbean island at this scale should look at Cayo Espanto or Fowl Cay.
