Palm Island Resort
A 135-acre Grenadine island with five beaches and one adults-only resort on it.
Palm Island lies in the southern Grenadines, a short boat ride from Union Island, and covers about 135 acres with five beaches around its edge. One resort occupies it, along with a small number of private homes, and there is no village and no through traffic. The island was a mangrove swamp until the 1960s, when its first lessee cleared it and planted the palms that gave it its present name.
Around forty-three rooms and cottages make up the resort, which takes adults only and runs largely all-inclusive. Casuarina Beach on the windward side runs for the better part of a mile and is usually empty. There is a spa, a dive centre and little else, which is the property's stated intention rather than an oversight.
Made from a swamp. The island was planted by hand from an unusable state, which is why the vegetation is uniform and comparatively young.

Who it is not for
Palm Island is wrong for families, since the resort takes adults only. It is wrong for travellers wanting a choice of restaurants and evening life, neither of which exists. And it is wrong for guests who need reliable connectivity and easy onward travel, given the boat and the small airstrip at Union. Families in the Grenadines should look at Young Island; those wanting more should look at Mustique.
