A thirty-five-acre island two hundred metres off St Vincent, with cottages in the hillside.
Young Island lies about two hundred metres off the southern tip of St Vincent, reached by a ferry that runs on demand and takes five minutes. The island covers thirty-five acres of steep planted hillside, and one resort occupies it. The mainland is close enough to see clearly, which sets the terms: this is a garden island beside a working country rather than a retreat from it.
Around twenty-nine stone cottages are set into the hillside among heavy planting, with a beach, a saltwater pool cut into the rock and a bar on a fort islet offshore. The property has run since the 1960s in much the same form, and its planting is now mature enough to be the island's principal feature.
Sixty years of gardening. The vegetation is the reason the island reads as it does, and it cannot be reproduced quickly.
Five minutes from St Vincent. Guests can use the country — markets, volcano, the Grenadines ferry — rather than being sealed away from it.
Who it is not for
Young Island is wrong for guests seeking remoteness, since the mainland is two hundred metres away. It is wrong for travellers wanting contemporary rooms, as the cottages are deliberately unchanged. And it is wrong for those needing a large beach, which the island does not have. And it is wrong for guests who want a dive centre and water sports on site. Those wanting Grenadine seclusion should look at Petit St. Vincent or Palm Island.
