Heron Island Resort
A coral cay on the southern Great Barrier Reef, shared with a university research station.
Heron Island is a coral cay about seventy kilometres off Gladstone in Queensland, reached by ferry or seaplane, sitting on a reef within a national park and marine park. The island carries the resort, a University of Queensland research station and a national park zone, which places it at P2: the resort does not have the island to itself and never has. This register holds it in the Extended Index for that reason and because the product is a reef resort rather than a luxury one.
Around 109 rooms make up the accommodation. The reef starts at the beach — guests walk in and snorkel over coral without a boat — and turtles nest on the cay in summer while tens of thousands of seabirds breed there. Jacques Cousteau dived here and the island's reef has been continuously studied since the 1950s.
Walk-in reef. No boat, no transfer. Very few places on the Great Barrier Reef put living coral within wading distance of a hotel room.
Seventy years of science on the same cay. The research station's records make this one of the best-documented reefs in the world, and the resort's guides work from them.
Who it is not for
Heron Island is wrong for guests expecting luxury — the rooms are simple and the register places it accordingly. It is wrong for travellers who dislike wildlife at close quarters, since the seabird colony is loud and constant in season. And it is wrong for those wanting an island to themselves. Those wanting the reef at a different level should look at Lizard Island.
