8 islands where scientists work and publish. Not a partnership announcement — people living on the island doing measurable work, and a record of what came out of it.

The arrangements differ. Some islands host an independent station older than the resort: Heron and Lizard both carry university research that predates the hotel. Some fund their own: Landaa Giraavaru has run manta and coral programmes for nearly two decades. Six Senses Laamu hosts three organisations at once in an atoll where it is the only resort.

For a guest the difference is in the quality of the answer. On these islands the person explaining the reef is the person counting it, and the briefing contains numbers rather than adjectives.

Not for travellers who find that earnest. Where the science is real it is also present — talks, tanks, survey boats leaving early — and it is not optional scenery.
