Cheval Blanc Randheli
Forty-five villas across five islands of one lagoon, with the spa on an island of its own.
Cheval Blanc Randheli occupies a lagoon in Noonu Atoll in the northern Maldives, forty minutes by seaplane from Malé. The Maison is spread across five islands within it: the main island holds the villas, the spa stands on a second reached by dhoni, and a third carries the four-bedroom Private Island, which is a separate entry here. Nobody else is in the lagoon.
Forty-five villas, overwater and beach, by the architect Jean-Michel Gathy. The spa island carries six overwater treatment villas; it is the Cheval Blanc Spa, and the treatments in it are designed by Guerlain — the spa is not a Guerlain spa, which the register had wrong until this reading. Five restaurants, among them an outpost of Le 1947, the name Cheval Blanc gives its fine-dining room at Courchevel. The brand is Cheval Blanc, owned by LVMH.
A spa on a separate island. Not a wing and not a pavilion but a boat ride, with six treatment villas standing over water. The arrangement is expensive and slightly impractical, which is the point of it.
European house service in the Maldives. Cheval Blanc trains to the standard of its Alpine and Parisian houses rather than to resort practice, and the result reads as more formal than its neighbours. Whether that is the right trade is the guest's to make.
Who it is not for
Randheli is wrong for a guest who wants barefoot informality: this is a formal house in a warm place, and the service is attentive rather than invisible. It is wrong for anyone who wants a single compact island to learn in a day, since the property is a lagoon crossed by boat — the spa alone is a separate island. And it is wrong for a party wanting the whole Maison: the exclusive-use product here is the Private Island, four bedrooms of the forty-five villas, and no whole-lagoon hire is published. For barefoot, look at Soneva Fushi or Gili Lankanfushi; for the whole place to yourself, the Entire Island collection.
