Archipelagos & Atolls

One property holding several islands, a lagoon or a whole atoll. The water is part of the estate.

One property holding more than one island — a group, a lagoon, or a whole atoll — so that the water between the islands belongs to the estate as much as the land does. 16 records. The distinction from a single island is not pedantry: it changes what a day can contain, because the boat stops being transport and becomes the point.

The arrangements differ and the register separates them. Bawah Reserve holds six islands and three lagoons, built by hand without heavy machinery. Islas Secas holds fourteen islands and puts guests on one, leaving thirteen to be visited and left again. Kanuhura keeps two of its three islands deliberately empty, at the cost of the capacity it could have built there. Shebara is four islands, two of which carry a four-villa ensemble each and are let entire.

An atoll is its own case. Where the property holds the rim, the lagoon inside is effectively private water, which is rarer and more consequential than any number of villas: it governs the diving, the light, and whether a sandbank appears at low tide for one party or for four.

Wrong for travellers who dislike boats, and wrong for anyone who wants to walk everywhere. The estate here is measured in water, and reaching most of it means getting into something that moves.
