Two islands in the far south, reopened under a new name after the Raffles years.
The property occupies two islands in Gaafu Alifu Atoll in the deep south of the Maldives, reached by domestic flight and boat. The southern atolls carry far fewer resorts than the centre, and the reefs here see correspondingly little traffic. One island holds the beach villas, the other the overwater ones, connected by boat — an unusual plan at this scale.
It opened as Raffles Maldives Meradhoo, and that chapter is held as a separate record here. Around thirty-eight villas make up the property under its present name, within Marriott's Autograph Collection, each with a pool. The change of operator is recent enough that the guest experience is still settling, and reviews of the earlier hotel describe a different property.
Two islands, thirty-eight villas. The space per guest is unusual for a Maldivian resort, and it comes from splitting a small inventory across two landmasses rather than concentrating it.
Deep south rather than central atolls. Gaafu Alifu is a long way from Malé and correspondingly quiet, which is the property's main geographic argument.
Who it is not for
This is wrong for guests booking on the strength of reviews, most of which describe the Raffles hotel rather than this one. It is wrong for travellers wanting a short transfer, since the southern atolls need a domestic flight plus a boat. And it is wrong for those who want a large resort's range of restaurants at thirty-eight villas. Those wanting the far south with a longer track record should look at Six Senses Laamu.
