The Brando
One motu of the atoll Marlon Brando bought, with a research station on the others.
The Brando occupies Onetahi, one motu of Tetiaroa — a coral atoll of a dozen motus north of Tahiti that Brando bought in the 1960s and spent the rest of his life trying to protect rather than develop. The resort shares the atoll with the Tetiaroa Society's research station and with seabird and turtle motus that are closed to guests entirely. Access is by the resort's aircraft from Papeete, about twenty minutes.
Thirty-five villas sit under trees along one beach. The property runs close to carbon-neutral: seawater air conditioning drawn from 900 metres down, coconut-oil biofuel, a solar array and its own water. The Tetiaroa Society is a separate organisation, not a resort department, and guests can work alongside it — turtle monitoring, mosquito eradication trials, coral surveys — as participants rather than spectators.
Seawater air conditioning at resort scale. Cold water from the deep ocean cools the whole property. It was among the first installations of its kind in hospitality and remains the clearest single answer to how a tropical resort halves its energy load.
The atoll outranks the hotel. Most of Tetiaroa is off limits by design, and the resort occupies one motu of it. The proportion of protected to built land here is unmatched in this register.
Who it is not for
The Brando is wrong for guests who want to explore an atoll freely — most of Tetiaroa is closed, and correctly so. It is wrong for travellers indifferent to the conservation story, since it shapes the food, the buildings and the excursions and cannot be opted out of. And it is wrong for those wanting Polynesian overwater bungalows, which do not exist here. Those wanting a motu without the programme should look at Motu Nao Nao.
