Soneva Jani

Soneva Jani stands on Medhufaru in Noonu Atoll, a forty-minute seaplane flight from Malé, inside a lagoon of 5.6 kilometres ringed by five islands. The resort occupies the main island; of the four islets in the lagoon one carries a beach club and three are left undeveloped. The resort opened in October 2016 with twenty-six villas — twenty-four over water and two on land — and has grown in stages since.

Fifty-nine villas today, most of them over water, many with a roof that retracts over the bed and a slide from the upper deck into the lagoon. Chapter Two added twenty-seven overwater villas in December 2020, taking the resort to fifty-four. There is an overwater telescope with a resident astronomer, which the operator calls the only one in the Maldives, and an overwater cinema. Soneva's 2 per cent carbon levy, charged on room revenue since 2008, funds the Soneva Foundation.

The lagoon is the property, not the island. Villas sit across 5.6 kilometres of water and are reached by boat or by long jetties; the sense of space comes from the lagoon rather than from land, and three of the four islets in it are deliberately left empty.

How the island was leased is on the public record. OCCRP reported from leaked files that the Shivdasanis obtained Medhufaru and its surroundings by a no-bid contract in 2014, during the tenure of a tourism minister later convicted in a separate corruption case. The report names Soneva among the recipients of leases awarded without the required tender; it does not allege wrongdoing by Soneva and carries no response from the company.
