COMO Maalifushi
The only resort in Thaa Atoll, with a surf break off its own reef.
Maalifushi lies in Thaa Atoll in the southern Maldives, reached by seaplane or domestic flight and boat. It is the only resort in the atoll — a claim very few Maldivian properties can make — and the water around it carries almost no other traffic. The reef produces a surf break that works in season, which is unusual for a resort island and draws a different guest.
Around sixty-five rooms, suites and villas make up the property, beach and overwater, with COMO Shambhala's wellness programme, a dive centre and a kids' club. It is the group's larger Maldivian house and works for families where Cocoa Island does not.
One resort in a whole atoll. In the Maldives this is the real measure of remoteness, and Thaa is among the emptiest atolls with a resort in it at all.
A surf break on the house reef. Very few Maldivian resorts have one; here it is part of the property's identity rather than an excursion.
Who it is not for
Maalifushi is wrong for guests on a short trip, since the transfer from Malé eats most of a day at each end. It is wrong for travellers who want neighbouring islands and excursions, as there are few. And it is wrong for those wanting a compact boutique property. And it is wrong for guests who need frequent flights and flexible dates, since the domestic schedule is thin. Those wanting COMO at small scale should look at Cocoa Island.
