Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Two islands joined by a footbridge, and the restaurant that put the Maldives underwater.
Rangali sits in South Ari Atoll, about thirty minutes by seaplane from Malé. The resort occupies two natural islands — Rangali Island and Rangalifinolhu — joined by a 500-metre timber footbridge across the lagoon. The larger island holds the family side and the beach villas; the smaller is adults-only and overwater. One resort holds both, and the split lets a single property run two different atmospheres without either interfering with the other.
Around 150 villas make this one of the larger properties in the atoll. Ithaa, opened in 2005, was the first all-glass undersea restaurant in the world and sits five metres below the surface; it has been copied everywhere since and remains the reason many guests come. South Ari is the atoll where whale sharks are resident year-round, and the resort's marine team runs trips accordingly.
Two islands, two products. Families on one, adults on the other, five hundred metres apart. Very few resorts can separate their guests that cleanly without building two hotels.
The first undersea restaurant. Ithaa was a structural experiment before it was a dining room, and it defined a category the Maldives has been building in for twenty years.
Who it is not for
Rangali is wrong for guests seeking a small, quiet island — 150 villas and a busy bridge make it a resort in full. It is wrong for travellers wanting an untouched atoll, since South Ari is developed and neighbouring islands are in sight. And it is wrong for anyone expecting the undersea restaurant to be a private experience; it is booked out months ahead. Those wanting quiet should look at The Nautilus or Soneva Secret.
