Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa
The only resort in its part of Gaafu Alifu, on one of the largest atolls in the world.
Hadahaa lies in Gaafu Alifu, the deep south of the Maldives and one of the largest true atolls in the world, reached by domestic flight from Malé and then boat. The island is small and round with a house reef circling it, and it sits in water that carries a fraction of the traffic of the central atolls. Very few resorts operate this far south.
Around fifty villas, beach and overwater, make up the property. It was the first Maldivian resort to achieve EarthCheck certification and its reef has been monitored continuously since. There is one spa, one dive centre and a small number of restaurants — the property is deliberately restrained where its neighbours in the north are not.
A house reef in genuine condition. Low traffic and long monitoring have kept the reef here better than the country's average, and it is reachable from the beach.
Restraint as the house style. Park Hyatt's Maldivian property does less than almost anything at its price, which is either the appeal or the problem.
Who it is not for
Hadahaa is wrong for guests on a short trip, since the southern transfer takes most of a day at each end. It is wrong for travellers wanting spectacle, as the property is understated by design. And it is wrong for those who need a large children's programme. Those wanting the far south with more around them should look at Six Senses Laamu.
