Velaa Private Island

A Noonu Atoll island built by an owner rather than a brand, with a golf academy on it.

Velaa occupies an island in Noonu Atoll, reached by seaplane from Malé. One resort occupies it. The property was built by a Czech owner as a private-standard resort rather than as a brand rollout, which explains a set of decisions no operator would have signed off — a snow room in the spa, a golf academy designed by José María Olazábal on an island this size, and a restaurant in a curved tower drawn from the shape of a Maldivian fish trap.

Forty-seven villas, houses and residences hold the island, with a substantial children's programme and a service ratio at the top of the market. The property closes briefly in September 2026 to rebuild the children's club. Velaa is one of the few Maldivian resorts where the architecture is idiosyncratic rather than templated, and the tower is the most photographed building in the atoll.

Owner-built, not brand-built. The oddities — snow room, golf academy, tower — exist because one person wanted them. That is the property's character and its main argument.

A golf academy on a Maldivian island is close to absurd on the face of it, and is exactly the kind of thing that only gets built when a committee is not involved.

Who it is not for

Velaa is wrong for guests wanting understatement — the property is designed to impress and does not hide it. It is wrong for adults-only travellers, since children are central to the island's life. And it is wrong for anyone booking around September 2026, when the children's club rebuild closes the property. Those wanting restraint in the same atoll should look at Cheval Blanc Randheli.
