Velaa Private Island
Forty-seven villas on forty-three hectares, with the only nine-hole golf academy in the Maldives.
Velaa occupies a 43-hectare island in Noonu Atoll, a forty-five-minute seaplane flight from Malé. One resort occupies it. The island was built by Radka and Jiří Šmejc, Czech owners, as an owner's project rather than a brand rollout, and the architect is Petr Kolář. That accounts for a set of decisions no operator would have signed off: a snow room in the spa, a golf academy, and a restaurant in a curved tower drawn from the shape of a Maldivian fish trap.
Forty-seven villas, houses and residences — reported as twenty-six beach, sixteen overwater and five residences, a breakdown the operator does not publish. There is a children's club, Lha Velaa, rebuilt during a one-month closure in September 2026; the resort itself stayed open. The golf academy has nine holes and was designed by José María Olazábal. Buyout is not advertised.
Owner-built, not brand-built. The snow room, the golf academy and the tower exist because one family wanted them rather than because a brand standard called for them. That is the property's argument and the reason it does not resemble its neighbours.

Who it is not for
Velaa is wrong for a guest who wants the island to be quiet about itself: the tower, the snow room and the academy are built to be noticed. It is wrong for travellers who want adults only, since the children's club and the family villas are central to how the island is used. And it is wrong for anyone who wants a short transfer — forty-five minutes by seaplane, with the flight window that implies.
