Mandarin Oriental, Venice
A twelve-acre monastery island in the lagoon, reopened in 2026 with a third of its rooms removed.
San Clemente is a private island of about five hectares in the Venetian lagoon, eight minutes by the hotel's boat from San Marco. The island carries a 900-year-old monastery complex, a twelfth-century church and gardens covering most of the ground. Its history runs from monastery to quarantine station to psychiatric hospital before hospitality — a sequence the buildings still show. It sits at P1 in this register: the lagoon is public water and the city is minutes away.
The property reopened in April 2026 as Mandarin Oriental, Venice, after a three-phase renovation begun in November 2025 with interiors by Albion Nord. The room count came down from around 190 to 136, with four dining venues, a spa, an outdoor pool, tennis and paddle courts. It is the third international brand on this island: the St Regis and Kempinski chapters are held as separate entries here.
Fewer rooms after the renovation. Cutting inventory by a quarter in a city with permanent excess demand is a deliberate decision about density, and the clearest signal of what the new operator intends.
Space is the scarce commodity. Twelve acres of garden and cloister is more ground than any hotel on the main islands of Venice can offer, and it is the whole argument for staying off them.
Who it is not for
This is wrong for guests who want to step out into Venice on foot — every departure is a boat on the hotel's schedule. It is wrong for travellers wanting the privacy the word island implies elsewhere in this register, since the lagoon is busy public water. And it is wrong for anyone booking on the strength of past reviews, which describe two earlier hotels rather than this one. Those wanting a similar arrangement at larger scale should look at JW Marriott on Isola delle Rose.
