Kokomo Private Island

A Fijian island with a farm, a marine lab and a children's club that is not an afterthought.

Kokomo occupies Yaukuve Levu in the Kadavu group of Fiji, reached by helicopter or seaplane from Nadi, on the edge of the Great Astrolabe Reef — the fourth largest barrier reef in the world. One resort occupies the island, which is hilly and green rather than flat and sandy. Manta rays pass through the channels here seasonally, and the resort's marine team monitors them.

Twenty-one beachfront villas and five hilltop residences hold the property, with a farm supplying much of the kitchen, a spa and a children's club that is central rather than peripheral. The island can be taken whole. The reef work — coral nurseries, manta identification, reef surveys — is run in-house by resident marine biologists.

Built for families without becoming a family resort. The kids' club is serious and so is the food, which is a harder combination than it sounds and rare at this level.

The Great Astrolabe on the doorstep. Kadavu is far enough from the Fijian mainstream that the reef here carries little visitor pressure, and the diving reflects it.

Who it is not for

Kokomo is wrong for adults-only travellers: children are part of the island's texture and the property does not hide them. It is wrong for guests wanting easy access, since Kadavu needs a helicopter or seaplane on top of the international flight. And it is wrong for those who want a flat, walkable sandbank — this is a steep green island with vehicles. Adults wanting Fiji should look at Turtle Island or Royal Davui.
