Vomo Island
A Fijian island of two hundred acres with a hill, a reef and thirty villas.
Vomo lies in the Mamanuca group of Fiji, about fifteen minutes by helicopter or forty-five by boat from Nadi, and covers around 225 acres with a hill at one end and reef on two sides. One resort occupies it. Vomo Lailai, a small uninhabited island offshore, belongs to the property and is used for picnics and days alone.
Around thirty villas and residences make up the resort, run all-inclusive and family-oriented, with a kids' club, a spa and a nine-hole golf course cut into the hillside. The property is Australian-owned and has been run independently rather than under a group for most of its life.
A second island for the day. Vomo Lailai gives guests somewhere to be dropped and collected, which very few Fijian resorts of this size can offer.
All-inclusive with a family programme. The format is unusual at this level in Fiji, where most properties charge separately and skew to couples.
Who it is not for
Vomo is wrong for adults-only travellers, since children are central to the property. It is wrong for guests seeking seclusion, as the Mamanucas carry heavy day traffic. And it is wrong for those wanting design-led interiors. And it is wrong for guests who want contemporary rooms rather than comfortable ones. Adults should look at Turtle Island or Royal Davui; those wanting privacy should look at Dolphin Island.
