Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort
The only resort on its own motu inside one of the most photographed lagoons in the Pacific.
Akitua is a small motu in the Aitutaki lagoon of the Cook Islands, reached by a two-minute ferry that the resort runs continuously — the only property in the country on a private island of its own. Aitutaki's lagoon is a triangular reef enclosure around fifteen kilometres across, shallow, pale and largely empty of development, and it is the reason people fly here rather than stopping in Rarotonga.
Around thirty-six bungalows, beach and overwater, make up the property, which is adults-only. It is small by international standards and run at a Cook Islands pace: one restaurant, one bar, a dive and lagoon-cruise operation. The lagoon rather than the resort is the product, and the property is honest about that.

Two minutes to the mainland. Unlike most private-island resorts this one has a village, a road and a market a short ferry away, which changes what a week here can include.
Who it is not for
Aitutaki is wrong for families, since the resort takes adults only. It is wrong for guests expecting international resort standards and a choice of restaurants — this is a small property in a small country. And it is wrong for travellers who want deep-water diving, as the lagoon is shallow. Those wanting Polynesia at resort scale should look at Le Taha'a or Four Seasons Bora Bora.
