Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru

A round island in North Malé with a coral restoration programme older than most resorts here.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Vabbinfaru is a small circular island in North Malé Atoll, about twenty minutes by speedboat from the airport, ringed entirely by its own house reef. One resort occupies it. The island is compact enough to walk around in fifteen minutes, and the reef around it has been the subject of a marine lab's work since the 1990s.

Forty-eight beach villas — no overwater accommodation at all — hold the property, which is unusual in a market that has moved almost entirely over the lagoon. The marine lab on the island runs coral propagation and turtle work with resident biologists, and its Lotus frame, an electrified steel structure seeded with coral, is among the longest-running restoration experiments in the Maldives.

No overwater villas, on purpose. Vabbinfaru kept its accommodation on the sand while the country built jetties, and the reef in front of it benefited.

A marine lab with a thirty-year record. Restoration data over that span is rare anywhere, and it makes the reef here one of the better-documented in the atoll.

Who it is not for

Vabbinfaru is wrong for guests who want an overwater villa, since none exists. It is wrong for travellers seeking a remote atoll — North Malé is busy and neighbouring resorts are close. And it is wrong for those wanting a large resort's choice of restaurants at forty-eight villas. Those wanting overwater nearby should look at Gili Lankanfushi or Huvafen Fushi.
