InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort
A Raa Atoll island beside a manta nursery, bookable by the villa or in its entirety.
Maamunagau lies in Raa Atoll in the northern Maldives, reached by seaplane. One resort occupies the island, which sits close to Hanifaru's wider manta system — a lagoon nearby functions as a nursery for juvenile mantas, monitored by the Manta Trust with a research base at the resort.
Around eighty-one villas and residences make up the property, and it is one of the few Maldivian resorts of this size that offers a full island buyout alongside ordinary bookings, which places it under Individual Stays plus Full Buyout in this register. There is a substantial family programme, several restaurants and a dive centre.
A manta nursery on the doorstep. Juvenile aggregations are rarer and more fragile than the adult sites, and the research base here works on them directly.
Buyout offered at eighty-one villas. Very few resorts this large publish a whole-island rate at all, and it makes the property unusual among its peers.
Who it is not for
Maamunagau is wrong for guests wanting a small or quiet island, since it is a full family resort. It is wrong for travellers seeking design-led interiors, which are conventional here. And it is wrong for those on a short trip, given the seaplane timings. And it is wrong for guests who want an adults-only property, which this is not. Those wanting Raa Atoll at smaller scale should look at The Nautilus or JOALI.
