Kura Kura occupies a small island in the Karimunjawa archipelago in the Java Sea, north of Semarang, reached by flight or ferry and then boat. The archipelago is a marine national park of twenty-seven islands, most of them uninhabited, in water that sees a fraction of the traffic of Bali or Raja Ampat. One resort holds the island.
Around twenty-six rooms and villas make up the property, Italian-owned and run with an Italian kitchen alongside Indonesian food. The proposition is a quiet park archipelago rather than a famous destination, and the register notes that the property is modest in scale and ambition against the rest of this collection.
A national park almost nobody visits. Karimunjawa is protected, close to Java's population centres and yet almost empty of tourism, which is an unusual combination.

Who it is not for
Kura Kura is wrong for guests expecting resort polish or a spa culture. It is wrong for travellers wanting world-famous diving, since Karimunjawa is good rather than exceptional. And it is wrong for those who need simple logistics from Bali. And it is wrong for guests who expect a dive operation of international standard. Those wanting Indonesian islands at a higher level should look at Bawah Reserve or Misool.
