Pangulasian Island Resort

The largest of El Nido's island resorts, on a forested ridge above a mile of beach.

Full entry · sources recorded · verification stamp pending

Pangulasian sits in the Bacuit archipelago off El Nido in Palawan, reached by boat from Lio airport. The island is forested and hilly with a long beach on its western side, and one resort occupies it. The Bacuit karst — limestone cliffs rising vertically out of clear water — is the landscape the archipelago is known for and it surrounds the island on every side.

Around forty-two villas, on the beach and up the ridge, make up the property, the largest of the El Nido Resorts group's four island properties. The group has run a marine and forest conservation programme across the archipelago for decades, with reforestation on the islands and reef monitoring in the bay, and it is unusual in publishing what it measures.

Forest above, reef below. The ridge villas sit in genuine secondary forest rather than landscaped garden, which few island resorts at this scale can offer.

A conservation record across four islands. El Nido Resorts has been working the same archipelago long enough for the data to mean something.

Who it is not for

Pangulasian is wrong for guests wanting seclusion, since El Nido's day-boat traffic works the surrounding bay heavily. It is wrong for travellers who need simple logistics, given the connections through Manila. And it is wrong for those seeking a small property at forty-two villas. And it is wrong for guests who want a quiet beach to themselves in the afternoon, when the boats arrive. Those wanting Palawan privately should look at Ariara or Amanpulo.
