COMO Laucala Island
The COMO years on a Fijian island, between Mateschitz's ownership and the current rebuild.
Laucala is a large island in northern Fiji with its own airstrip, farms, a golf course and twenty-five villas, bought by Dietrich Mateschitz in 2003 from the estate of Malcolm Forbes and developed into one of the most expensive resorts in the Pacific. In 2021 COMO Hotels took over management, and the property traded as COMO Laucala Island.
That arrangement ended in January 2026, when the resort closed for a full renovation and the management agreement concluded at the same time. The island is expected to return under independent operation, held here as Laucala Island Resort. This record closes the COMO chapter rather than the island, which is unchanged.
Five years under a brand. Laucala had been owner-run for nearly two decades before COMO, and returns to independence after it.
A closed name, not a closed island. The farms, the airstrip and the villas remain; what ended was the management agreement.
